Pro814 Electronic Super 8 Camera
Introducing the Pro814 Electronic Super 8 Camera.
After almost a decade of building Super 8 cameras, Canon redesigned the classic 814 AZ and the Canon 814 Electronic was introduced.
Becoming the flagship of their new lineup, this model redefining Super 8 filmmaking. Its boasts a number of upgraded features such as a newly designed lens for brighter contrast images, a lower shutter angle for improved sharpness and more exposure range, an updated diopter system with build in light shield and features that allow for macro shooting, cool fading effects, single frame animation, and time lapse.
The Lens:
The popular 8x zoom lens was newly designed to provide higher contrast and a bright viewfinder. The name 814 breaks down to meaning, an 8 to 1 power zoom lens and an aperture can be opened up to a 1.4 (14).
The 58mm front focus barrel also supports a MACRO function in the wide of the lens. MACRO can be used for close up photography and also supports accessories Macro wide angle lenses like the Canon C-8 Ultrawide.
The Focus:
Uses a micro prism and is set for the operators eye using an adjustable diopter (-3 to 2 diopter) Single Lens Reflex.
The Variable Shutter System:
Variable shutter opening control helps achieve perfect fading out/in. Slow-motion shooting is also possible when filming at 40 fps.
Normal super 8 camera’s have a fixed shutter opening, but the 814 is 155 degree or 1/60th of a second shooting at 24. The 814 E offers2 additional faster settings- one for sharper images and the other for a greater exposure range. . This is particularly valuable in Super 8 today because you can use higher speed film in brighter lighting situations without the need for Neutral density filtration. For example with the shutter set at its fastest position, 500 ASA film can be shot as if it was 125 ASA.
Electronic Remote Release:
The Pro814 E model has and electronic trigger release which allows single frame for animation, and time lapse accessories can be run by a simple switch rather that a mechanical remote release simplifying any application that requires remote operation of the camera.
PC Flash Socket:
The PC flash socket was designed to trigger a flash during animation photography but it can also be used to generate a pulse from the cameras transport which in the 1970’w could be used will customized sound recording systems to do sync sound.
Metal Gears:
The internals gear box of the camera are driven by metal gears which adds substantially to the future reliability of this product.
Rear Load:
The rear load camera was pioneered by Nizo was adopted by Canon in the 1970. It solutions some of the loading errors that can occur with side mounted.
Diopter and Eye Piece Cover:
There is no eye cup with the model but rather a built in light shield which covers the eyepiece. Because your eye socket is not in contact with the eye piece the diopter setting once set will not be compromised during operation.
Manual and Auto Exposure:
The material has been replaced in the Pro814E to restore the reliability of this critical system. The auto exposure has cartridge detection system that can read cartridge with ASA 50 to 500 ASA Notches.
85 FIlter:
The built in 85 filter is normal set to being in the film path. When a Daylight film cartridge is inserted the 85 filter is removed. To remove the filter with shooting indoors with tungsten film you must thread in the filter removal screw into the top of the camera
